What is VoIP?
Solution
VoIP is an acronym for
Voice Over Internet Protocol
. It is commonly pronounced
Voyp
. "Voy", rhymes with "boy", followed by the "p" sound at the end of "rope".
Traditionally, telephone calls all got routed over dedicated wires that got reserved for your use for the entire duration of your call. This means that if 10 people wanted to talk on the phone at the same time, then there had to be 10 wires available (or someone would get a busy signal). VoIP allows your phone conversation to be broken into a stream of little packets of information. These little packets can travel on the same wire (at the same time) with the little packets from other people's phone conversations. This is far more efficient, and also means that telephone calls can now travel over the internet.
What this means to you:
If you already pay for an internet connection, you no longer need to pay extra money to make phone calls!!!
